Thread: What's your process of making up punches?

  1. #1

What's your process of making up punches?

I'm interested in how you guys write the "wow" effect bars
Like not "what is punchline in your oppinion" but how yall get these in your head formed

For example when I see some phrase/word/name etc. that I see some other connected meaning in it, I just google related words to it, read 'em and think until some random shit hits my head with it's double meaning or something, create a multi-syllable rhyme and that's it

Bro, did you make a call-out thread, then ask how to write bars?

Google can return word associations from other angles which I couldn't imagine, 'cause my English level is not so good to think so deep. It helps a lot sometimes

And ye, I'll check it out

Re: What's your process of making up punches?

So something that I heard years ago when watching stuff from one of my favorite rappers (Big Pun) stuck with me. They said he would write the hooks first then formulate the song around that. At that time (90s), most rappers did the opposite which is why their hooks either didn't exist, weren't consistent with the song, or had someone else doing them all together. I take this mindset into writing a bar. For a verse, I try to write down a few concepts into just notes that I can either flesh out as I write them or remove if I think of something better. I'd probably start with a sticky note or something. For instance, if I battled BOZO it would look something like this on my note:

    1. BOZO sounds like the name of a clown - is there a good way to flip this?
    2. Any past battles that he got stomped on?
    3. random metaphor.
    4. wordplay to try "punctuate" \ "punk you ate"? Does that work?
    5. etc.

Then I'd go back over them and see what I can come up with and refine it a few times before committing to it. I probably ultimately read my entire verse about 20 times minimum before I post to check syllable counts and wording just for some dude who's like 0-10 to tell me that it's off anyways. After I post I often come back to re-read stuff with a different mind to see where it could have been improved.

Writing as a hobby or profession is an evolving activity. I often write concepts then walk away for hours to see what past me came up with.

I've studied the work of many great punchline writers over the years which is why I can say with absolute confidence that the thing that makes them so good is autism.

And you are obsessed with fervently making attempts to have yourself appear maximum sassy, which if you think long and hard about it lends itself to the assumption you've been around a cock or two or fifteen or seventy six.

Also wanted to point out that the original poster specifically requested Zunto exclude himself from this conversation.
