The key to making good graphics are...
1. Learning about the design principles that make things look good - I think this is THE most important aspect of graphics. Here's a quick starting point... http://www.princetonol.com/groups/ia.../elements2.htm - it may sound too abstract and many designers argue about this subject. And I don't think anyone has ever mastered this to the point of exact science. But more you research about it and internalize this, the better you'll get. With ups and downs along the way, of course. These principles were developed by studying thousands of years of artistry. Don't make the mistake of thinking that your 1-4 year of playing with photoshop will overcome this knowledge.
2. Learning how to use those principles in your work and fit them in your message - I think this is the hardest part. But more you practice, the better you'll get. Experiment with different styles. And you'll realize that there are always more than one best way to approach your work. It just depends... Be creative. You'll understand this more as you gain experience... Also try to study as many other graphics/designers as possible. This will help you become more creative. But don't be a clone. Learn from different styles, try combining them, eliminate what you don't like about them, etc.
3. Be efficient in the craft side of things - This is like the techniques side of things. But without the above 2, this means nothing. You could know all these effects and fancy things, but if the overall outcome looks shitty, then you just practiced, not make a good art work. And tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, etc make this easier for you, but they are NOT what make a good graphic. YOU are the artist. Don't rely on them or learning tutorials/techniques and think that makes you a good graphics artist. They are only tools to help your ideas and vision into life. Again, don't be a clone. Better yet in the process of key number 2, in figuring out how to incorporate principles into your work, try to develop your own techniques and ways for efficiency. This will guide you to become better at number 2 as well. Also remember that even if you develop some kind of new technique, unless you develop the above two keys, you'll not end up making good art. At best you'll be just making tuts, if that's what you want to do.
If you have any questions I'll try to answer them.
